VIENNA, VA., June 24, 2020 – Sightline Media Group today announced Mike Gruss has been named executive editor of Sightline’s Business to Government Group, which includes Defense News and C4ISRNET.

Prior to Gruss’s new role he was editor of Defense News’ sister publication, C4ISRNET, the leading media brand dedicated to the defense networks, communications and ISR sector. At C4ISRNET Gruss developed the editorial team’s new digital strategy, launch of video efforts and new virtual events strategy. Additionally, Gruss created streamlined thought leadership programs, and became the face of our editorial teams at conferences and events. As an immediate priority in this new role, Gruss will lead the rollout and execution of planned strategic changes across Sightline’s business to government brands.

He brings more than 20 years or reporting and editing experience with prior roles at FedTech, SpaceNews, The Virginian-Pilot, and The Journal Gazette.

Gruss replaces Jill Aitoro who will be leaving to pursue an editorial opportunity in technology, a long-time passion of hers. “We are extremely happy for Jill and thank her for her years of dedication to our newsroom and readers,” said David Steinhafel, CEO of Sightline Media Group. “We have nothing but confidence in Mike Gruss and believe he is an excellent replacement for this role. Our newsroom is in good hands.”

In his three years at Sightline Media Group, Gruss’s focus has primarily been on how the military, federal government and U.S. Department of Defense use cybersecurity, emerging battlefield technologies and drones. “These are the technologies of the future,” said Gruss. “I am excited to bring my passion for the Defense technologies to readers across our Business to Government Group.”

In prior roles, Gruss covered national security space and missile defense programs, as well as state and local government issues. In addition to his newsroom experience, Gruss has taken the editorial lead on multiple events, custom products, and special advertorial projects over the past three years. He has played an instrumental role in growing the events and custom business at Sightline Media Group through his willingness to experiment with unique ways to execute sponsored content. His new role will allow him to expand these abilities across more facets of the company. “Mike and I have worked lockstep over the years and we will continue to work closely over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition,” said Aitoro.
