Changes to Defense News, C4ISRNET and Federal Times announced

VIENNA, VA., July 15, 2020 – Sightline Media Group today announced important updates to Defense News, C4ISRNET, and Federal Times. These key strategic changes will align the newsroom’s coverage with the global defense community’s increasingly unified approach to warfare.

“The disruption during the Covid-19 pandemic afforded us a unique opportunity to assess the latest trends in the global defense sector,” says Mike Gruss, newly appointed executive editor of Sightline’s business to government brands and editor of Defense News. “By following through on the results of this analysis, Defense News and C4ISRNET will continue as leading media brands in the defense and technology space.”

As a result of this analysis, a series of changes will roll out later this year.

  1. Defense News print – As a first step, the Defense News print product will be back in subscribers’ hands beginning with the Top 100 issue, which will be delivered in late August. Moving forward, Defense News will become a monthly publication in print. As always, the same quality coverage and analysis that has become the Defense News standard for over 30 years will remain, but with a cadence that better balances digital news coverage with thoughtful print analysis.
  2. C4ISRNET – Beginning with the August issue, C4ISRNET’s print coverage will roll into Defense News publication as a regular section highlighting battlefield technology in the United States and across the globe. C4ISRNET will cease production of its own magazine, but will continue its robust digital coverage via its website and thought leadership products such as e-books, whitepapers and virtual events. Since the beginning of 2018, C4ISRNET has increased web traffic more than 75 percent, and its credible reporting and access to decision makers has made it the most trusted brand in this space. Together, Defense News and C4ISRNET are well-positioned to serve our audience amid shifts in the defense market while also taking a more global view of modern warfare.
  3. Cyber coverage -Our industry leading coverage of national security cyber issues will transition from Fifth Domain to C4ISRNET’s cyber channel: c4isrnet.com/cyber. By eliminating the separate, standalone brand dedicated to cybersecurity, we are centralizing our digital coverage of network-based warfare, and recognizing cyber as a pillar of military technology development. Additionally, these changes will only enhance our ability to cover US Cyber Command and better reflect our strategic focus on DoD and allied military cyber operations.
  4. Federal Times – Federal Times will return to its roots. Its historical mission has been to provide federal employees with unbiased and objective reporting on the workforce developments that affect their careers. As part of this shift, we will no longer produce a print version of Federal Times. The Federal Times newsletter will continue to be delivered weekly, instead of daily, and will aggregate the industry’s most important workforce news.

“Our priority is to execute on all these critical changes while maintaining an exceptional standard of journalism,” says Gruss. “All of us here at Sightline look forward to this new chapter with our readers and partners.”
